JMEC delegation headed by H.E Festus Mogae met Pres Kiir in Juba State House
The Chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) Festus Mogae says he will work with President Salva Kiir and his new deputy Taban Deng Gai for peace implementation in South Sudan.
Mogae, the former president of Botswana, is charged with overseeing the Ceasefire Monitoring Mechanism and supporting the process of setting up other transitional institutions in the country.
In a Friday statement after meeting President Kiir and new First Vice President Taban Deng, Mogae said he will seek government guidance for smooth implementation of last August’s peace deal.
He pointed out that the oversight body will still give advice and that it will also listen and seek the government advice for peace-building in the country.
The former President also urged President Kiir’s government to accept the deployment of regional troops in Juba for the sake of peace and stability in South Sudan, while calling on the government to mobilize citizens for peace.
This came after South Sudan opposition leader Riek Machar was discharged from hospital and sent to heal at a Khartoum based residence.
President Kiir sacked Machar from his position as vice president after renewed fighting in Juba last month.
